Personality Disorders Program

Personality disorders make up a group of mental illnesses in which a person displays long-term rigid patterns of behavior and thoughts that don’t adapt to a wide range of settings. Most people who have these disorders don’t seek treatment immediately.

If you are or a person you know is, displaying behaviors that highly interfere with the ability to function normally in work or relationships, don’t hesitate to engage in a structured program on how you can help yourself or someone you love.

Personality disorders exist on a continuum so they can be mild to more severe in terms of how pervasive they are and to what extent a person exhibits the features of a particular personality disorder. While most people can live pretty normal lives with mild personality disorders (or more simply, personality traits), during times of increased stress or external pressures (work, family, a new relationship, etc.), the symptoms of the personality disorder may begin to seriously interfere with their emotional and psychological functioning.

Many different types of personality disorders exist, and the symptoms vary greatly according to each type. Commonly diagnosed personality disorders include:

  • Cluster A (Eccentric or odd behavior): Schizotypal Personality Disorder, Schizoid Personality Disorder, and Paranoid Personality Disorder.
  • Cluster B (Dramatic, erratic or emotional behavior): Antisocial Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Histrionic Personality Disorder.
  • Cluster C (Anxious, fearful behavior): Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder, Dependent Personality Disorder, and Avoidant Personality Disorder.

Treatment for personality disorders depends on the type of personality disorder and the individual’s unique interpersonal struggles. A combination of psychotherapy and medication is generally effective.
